Most people don’t know that Marquette University was founded in 1881. The original campus buildings were destroyed in the earthquake of 1927, but the present campus features many interesting buildings and statues.

Why is Marquette University called Marquette?

The campus sprawls across 53 acres; there are 16 buildings named after Jesuit priests and brothers, such as Marquette Hall (after Father Jacques Marquette, the namesake of Marquette University), which was built in 1922. The university library, with its ornate ceilings and wooden carvings, is located in the Raynor Library . The campus also features an MU-produced statue of Father Jacques Marquette, carved out of white limestone.

 

What is Marquette Known for?

The school mascot is the Golden Eagle. There are four sororities, as well as five fraternities, organizations that promote academic achievement as well as social and civic service. In 2010, the Marquette University Golden Eagles baseball team was invited to play in the NCAA Regionals.

Is it hard to get into Marquette?

There are many ways for students to get involved on campus. There are also a number of student-run publications, including the “Marquette Tribune”, a university newspaper which publishes every Wednesday, and also releases an annual yearbook.

Students can become involved in more than 40 student clubs including Student Government, Delta Phi Nu (a political science club), Students Against Social Injustice (a social justice advocacy group), and many other religious groups to name just a few.

Students at Marquette University benefit from the Jesuit tradition of caring for students, which includes extensive financial aid packages. Academic standard are high; in order to be accepted into the university, an applicant must complete 12 years of school (high school diploma with 16 academic credits) and score well on standardized testing, such as the ACT or SAT. The university features a large number of degree programs, including business and management, education, social work, criminal justice studies, sports administration, biology and psychology.
